The Cassopian Conflict
Pedigran came into rule at a time of utopian prosperity. The economic structures put into place by his father and grandfather were functioning perfectly and sadly this was the last time they would be. It began on the Southern Continent where a contingent known as the Cassopian Brotherhood came into conflict with Ruinousian trade partners in Merkanth. They had been raiding shipments of good from the merchants leaving them with no profit and nothing to trade. Soon it became so bad that all shipments from Ruinous to Merkanth ceased completely. This halt in exporting goods cause a devastating blow to the Ruinousian economy as suddenly their income source had been cut off. Though Pedigran assured his Lords that they would be able to survive without the profits they still rallied themselves into a panic. Ruinous thrust itself into a minor depression. Knowing they needed to resume trade with Merkanth, as Merkanth was the center of all trade to the south, Pedigran declared war on the Cassopian Brotherhood, saying that they attacked them indirectly. All of his lords rallied to the cause and small contingencies from each house were sent to oppose the Botherhood. Unfortunately Pedigran underestimated the Cassopians and most of the initial wave of men sent to Merkanth were nearly wiped out. Again Pedigran called for his lords to send more men, an better knights. He remarked that their first attempt they had not been sure what to expect and so they sent their less experienced warriors and knights. This time Salvator "Heath" Gaferty, the Lord of Ellison and Grandmaster to the King, would lead the small army that they would send. When he arrived in Merkanth Salvator quickly deployed his army to defend the city and made allies with many wealthy merchants. The merchants had agreed that they would employ guilds and mercenaries to fight for them against the Brotherhood. This alliance gave Salvator the edge that he needed and allowed him to take the fight to the brotherhood. It had appeared after a few months of fighting that the Brotherhood had been beaten back and so Salvator had planned to continue their occupation of Merkanth for some time until they deemed that they had their own means to defend themselves. Sadly though the Grandmaster was mistaken. The Brotherhood had not been beaten back, they simply took that time to regroup and launch an attack on Ruinous. They first landed on Tior Island but soon the Brotherhood was appearing all over Ruinous. Villages of common folk were the first to come under fire, but eventually it grew to attacks in the capital city, Fort Ellison, Adelphia, and the Blue Shell. The Kings brother Clancy had tried to lead the Royal Army against them, but through gorilla tactics they were able to easily evade him. Pedigran was backed up against the wall and feared the possibility that he could be killed in his own home. He had started to become quite unhinged and would often throw wild tantrums on his Royal Knights. It was not until the day we now know as The Arrival that the tide began to change. On that day Pedigran had been approached by a man from the Southern Continent who claimed he could defeat the Cassopian Brotherhood. Pedigran amused at this concept decided to hear the mans proposition. The man approached the King and asked only that Pedigran make him a knight when he returned. He wanted no gold, no land, no titles, just to be made a knight. And so Pedigran humored the man angered that he would knight him if he eliminated the threat of the Brotherhood. It was many month later and the man had not returned, in fact it is said that he became some what of a joke at court. The council would often jest about the man who promised to defeat the brotherhood, and some would say that the attacks had begun to subside. The legend of the man had begun to spread and it was rumored among the common folk that they had seen a man with long auburn hair dragging about a chain of heads. One day though the man did return and dragging along behind him was the fabled chain of heads. He dragged them through the entire city and across the bridge to the gate of Stallworth Keep and knelt in front of the gate. Pedigran went to greet him and he looked up and told him that he was a man of his word. Padigran then kept to his side of the bargain and knighted the man there at the gate, but he did not know his name. The manx rose and said that his name was Daerunt Danford. With the conflict over trade could officially resume with Merkanth and Pedigran hoped they would make a full recovery.
Daerunt Rises
Daerunt quickly gained a reputation throughout Ruinous has the hero of the war and tourneys were held at near every castle in his honor, and he won every one. With each tourney more packed than the last, as people would travel just to see him compete again, it created a boost in the economy right away. In time Daerunt had become an icon to the people and a celebrity amongst Lords. Pedigran himself had taken to Daerunt as well and often they travel together from tourney to tourney. Pedigran seldom spent time in the capital any more as he felt he needed to attend every fight to see his prized warrior. When Ser Robin Testoke Commander of the Royal Knights, an older knight, passed away it was Daerunt who was chosen to precede him, and not his son or grandson. Pedigran and Daerunt began to grow even closer with one and other. They often would meet privately before and after council meetings to share their personal thoughts on decisions. They truly trusted one and other. Pedigran though began to grow suspicious of his councilors fearing that they were making selfish discussions that would only benefit their houses, but still they were just suspicions and peace remained in tact. That is until the circus came to town.
The War of Extermination
For the first time ever a spectacle from the Southern Continent had come to Ruinous. Duran Atoll's Traveling Circus had first come to Tior Island then to Adelphia. Word quickly spread about the new form of exotic entertainment that had become a craze in the south and since Daerunt had stopped competing in tourneys the people had been starving for entertainment. So naturally Pedigran was intrigued by the show and request that Duran come to Stallworth and that he would host his circus for a week. Duran Atoll quickly accepted his offer and came. The capital was a buzz that entire week and each night they had Pedigran play a special role in the entertainment, honoring him or featuring him in some way. On the last night however the Seer-Seer requested to see Pedigran. Pedigran happily trudged to the Seer to have his fortune told, expecting to hear how he will be a prosperous king and that he will have a long rein and many grandsons but instead he got something very different. There in front of his entire court and the wealthier common folk he was told that a powerful Mage would take his throne from him and that his entire line will be wiped out. Pedigran did not like this and took offense to it, telling Duran Atoll that his circus was to leave in the morning and not to return again. Quickly though the seeds of paranoia had begun to sprout in Pedigran and he became dreadfully fearful of anyone who could use magic. He would not allow Daerunt to leave his side for some time and in the panic he had his High Mage, Sissold Nands, arrested and imprisoned for treason. Then Pedigran, against the advice of his council, declared all Mages outlaws and set for them all to be arrested. It started first with just the House Mages that advised each lord, but The Endaures refused his request. Pedigran then declared war on Issaeos and as a show of might executed some 3o mages that had already been rounded up, mostly from Black Stone Tower, among them was Sissolds son and heir. Sissold was powerless to act as he was being held in an anti magic cell that he fashioned himself. Pedigran put Daerunt in command of his army and sent him to meet with each house individually to convey to them the importance of this cause. Pedigran was convinced that the Mages were to blame for the Cassopian Conflict, as they brought the existence of Ruinous to the Sea of Sand, linking them with slave trade. However Daerunt did not feel the same way as Pedigran and each lord he met with he secretly conspired to usurp Pedigran. He had convinced the Leones, Aleers, Nyis' and Spewakes to his cause as well as the Nands, who's lord was held captive and heir had just been executed, by showing them that he secretly was a Mage and that he had been hiding it all these years because he did not wish to attend the Academy or serve as a Mage. They all agreed t to support the Endaures and wanted to rally their armies, but Daerunt told them each not to that he would end the war from the inside and kill Pedigran, that all he needed was their assurance that they would back his claim. They all agreed and Daerunt returned to the Capital. There he and Pedigran waited for the armies of Ruinous to arrive, but only three came, The Castello's, the Testokes, and the Gafartys. Outraged by the breaking of his lords sworn oaths he declared them all enemies of the crown, the four combined armies after all did outnumber the combined forces of the other houses. It was on the eve of their departure for Issaeos that Pedigran hosted one final feast for his lords and families. Lords David Testoke, Alex Castello, and Salvator Gafarty were all in attendance, as well as Pedigran's brother Clancy, and all their children, and their children's children. The feast was supposed to be a grand seeing off to a short war, but instead it turned into the end of that war. Daerunt had taken this opportunity to assassinate Pedigran, and when the three lords in attendee refused to accept him as king he killed them as well. In order to secure his claim to the throne he was forced to kill all of the Lagrest children, as all of them had been there, as well as his brothers in arms the Royal Knights. He only spared one life, that of Dyrad Grantinesworth, the present commander of the Royal Knights. Though Dyard did not conspire with Daerunt, he knew that Dyard felt uneasy with Pedigran's war. Soon the other Lords and their armies arrive at Stallworth the pelage fealty to Daerunt. In time even the new lords of Ellison, Waldwick Virile, and Castello would bend their knee to Daerunt. There was a new King. A new line. A new legacy. Through Pedigran's madness the Lagrest line had come to an end. Never again would a Lagrest sleep in Stallworth Keep.
